Australian Chess Problem Materials

The following compilation of problem materials includes all of the major problem magazines and columns published in Australia from early last century to the present. In addition, you will find many articles and e-books documenting Australian chess problem history and its important figures.

This extensive collection is available largely thanks to the colossal efforts of Bob Meadley and Ian Shanahan, who undertook to gather and scan the materials; Ian also converted most of the documents to the current PDF format. Nigel Nettheim is another contributor who has provided the problem and endgame columns from some of the earlier magazines. We also acknowledge the authors and editors who kindly gave permission to have their works disseminated on this site, namely Geoff Foster, Bob Meadley, Ian Shanahan, and Arthur Willmott.

Problem History

Since 2007, each Australian Junior Chess Championship has had a problem-solving section, usually organised by Nigel Nettheim and Geoff Foster. The 2008 event was run by Geoff, Dennis Hale, and Ian Shanahan. The page linked below gives you access to the Reports for all of these solving events. Further, a Guided Problem Composing Competition began in 2015, run by Nigel Nettheim and Peter Wong. All of the documents associated with this tourney are also available for download here.
