More AI chess images

Last year my blog AI chess images examined a free online tool that employs AI to generate high-quality pictures, based on descriptions given in natural language. I used the application to create a set of 32 chess-themed images which can be downloaded from my chess graphics site, Virtual Pieces. For this update, a new collection of 32 chess images has been added, half of them in a large landscape format. Previously the tool produced only square pictures sized 1024 x 1024 px, so the landscape option of 1792 x 1024 px (1.75 ratio) now available represents a major improvement. I mostly use the created files as wallpapers for my PC, and they still look sharp when stretched to fill the screen of my 2K monitor. Two of my favourites have been placed on this site as headers of the Home and About pages.
The AI application is accessible on two Microsoft sites with different user interfaces. The first is the Bing Image Creator. Enter the prompt or a brief description of the scene or objects to be depicted, and the tool will create four square images. When you open one of them, a menu appears with a resize-to-landscape button (this actually generates a fresh landscape image under the same prompt, rather than enlarging the current square image). Users are allocated 15 “boosts” per day, though I have found that even when they run out, the tool continues to work without noticeably slowing down. The second site is Microsoft Designer which has a Create images page. Here the prompt box is accompanied by a menu for size selection, which lets you generate four landscape (or even portrait) pictures simultaneously. However, this site gives you only 15 credit points per month, and when that drop to zero the application ceases to function.
This AI tool is great at rendering objects in a semi-realistic style, and I have been experimenting with various materials and colours for the chess pieces. For the present collection, I focus on four themes that yielded especially pleasing results: (1) Blue marble, (2) Colourful metallic, (3) Gold-diamond, and (4) Colourful origami. Two samples from each group of eight images are shown below – click on any to view at full size. You can preview and download the whole set of 32 files at Virtual Pieces.
